La Vleeshal è stata costruita all'inizio del XVII secolo. La città aveva bisogno di una Vleeshal poiché la popolazione cittadina cresceva, aumentando così la domanda di carne. L'amministrazione comunale dell'epoca desiderava un edificio riccamente decorato con i migliori materiali. L'architetto cittadino Lieven de Key ha soddisfatto questa richiesta utilizzando molto pietra naturale.
L'edificio è uno dei migliori esempi dello stile rinascimentale olandese, il che si manifesta nei numerosi ornamenti notevoli. Sono particolarmente evidenti le teste di pecora e di bue che richiamano la funzione originale della hall. La Vleeshal è ora la sede distaccata del Frans Halsmuseum. Nel seminterrato si trova il Museo Archeologico.
