In het station was Karel van de Woestijne ooit twee uur lang in juli 1916 de "gevangene" van de Duitsers. Hoewel hij daarvoor toestemming had verkregen, mocht hij de Etappestad Gent niet binnen en moest er twee uur wachten op de volgende trein: "Ik kocht sigaren. Ik proefde al de merken die daar te krijgen waren. Intusschen bestudeerde ik het station: ik heb het tot hiertoe verfoeid; nu vond ik het buitengemeen-oordeelkundig gebouwd, want gevangenschap stemt mild bij het beoordeelen van architectuur. (...) Ik waagde mij tot bij de wachtzaal. Binnen in die wachtzaal was eene monumenteele toonbank te zien in neo-Gothischen stijl, voorzien van blinkende bierpompen."
