Hier te Schiplaken en het gelijknamige bos werd de gruwelijke veldslag van Schiplaken gevochten tijdens Wereloorlog I. Deze veldslag wordt grijpend beschreven in het boek van Stefan Hertmans, Oorlog en Terpentijn: "In het dorp zagen we de sissende ruïnes van huizein in de regen, de door mortiervuur gedode beesten en mensen, de uitgebrande kerk, die pas zeven jaar tevoren was ingehuldigd door kardinaal Mercier. Dat was alles wat wij merkten van de gruwelijke veldslag van Schiplaken, die alle schoolboeken zou halen".
