Kea wordt ook wel het Verbrande Eiland genoemd. Tussen 198 v.Chr. en 1950 n.Chr. zijn er 14 uitbarstingen geregistreerd.
De locatie is midden in de caldera, wat aangeeft dat de vulkaan nog steeds actief is.
De caldera ontstond in 1450 v.Chr. na een grote uitbarsting die een laag puimsteen van 13 m dik op het eiland creëerde. De instorting van een gebied van 84 km² veroorzaakte een enorme vloedgolf van 250 m hoog en een snelheid van 350 km/u. Sommigen zeggen dat deze vloedgolf de grote beschaving van Minos op Kreta vernietigde.
