In de Upper Paloelithic period, ongeveer 18.000 jaar geleden, liep de kustijn veel verder zeeinwaarts. De volledige baai stond zo goed als droog. Toen het klimaat warmer werd (vanaf de laatse ijstijd naar het Holoceen, ongeveer van het Paleolithicum tot nu) begon heel wat landijs te smelten en steeg het zeeniveau wereldwijd meerdere tientallen meters.
