De kapel werd gebouwd ter ere van de Portugese overwinning op het Franse leger in 1809.
In 1809 vonden er verschillende veldslagen en botsingen plaats tussen Portugese strijdkrachten en het Franse leger tijdens de Tweede Franse Invasie van Portugal. De Slag bij de Douro en de verdediging van de Amarante-brug zijn belangrijke momenten waarop de Portugese strijdkrachten, vaak in samenwerking met de Britten, erin slaagden de Franse invasie te weerstaan en af te weren.
