Efter Anden Verdenskrig blev han lektor ved KUL og parlamentarisk redaktør for De Nieuwe Standaard. Han blev også chefredaktør for det politiske ugeblad 't Westen, grundlagt af Jos De Saeger (1945-1947).
Efter sit ægteskab i 1945 bosatte han sig i den flamsk-brabantske kommune Lot, hvor hans hustru var apoteker. Der blev han ved de første efterkrigs kommunalvalg bedt af den lokale CVP-afdeling om at føre liste. CVP opnåede straks flertallet. Van Elslande blev i januar 1947 borgmester i Lot, og har været det uafbrudt, indtil han i 1976 videregav kæden til sin efterfølger Frans Roossens. I løbet af sit næsten 30-årige borgmesterembede formåede han at omdanne Lot til en "model-industriedorf".
