Havnen ligger i den vestlige del af Wesel mellem Rheinkilometer 814,50 – 815,90. To kilometer længere mod syd – ved udmundingen af Wesel-Datteln-kanalen i Rhinen – ligger Rhein-Lippe-havnen i Wesel. Ligeledes munder Lippe ud i Rhinen parallelt med havnebassinet.
Allerede i 1355 er det dokumenteret, at der blev drevet handel ved Lippe i Wesel med hjælp fra et kranskib. I 1407 blev Wesel udnævnt til hansestad, og i den forbindelse blev et nyt kranskib installeret ved Rhins bredden. Det første havnebassin ved Rhinen blev færdiggjort i 1650, og en ny sikkerhedshavn blev endelig færdiggjort i 1896. Det gamle havnebassin blev lukket i 1927.
