Dieses Denkmal befindet sich an einem privilegierten Ort im Zentrum des Domplatzes von Palermo und ist Santa Rosalia, der Schutzpatronin der Stadt, gewidmet.
Es wurde im Jahr 1744 von V. Vitaliano aus weißem Marmor gefertigt.
Es gibt eine Legende über Santa Rosalia: Rosalia Sinibaldi war ein adliges Mädchen normannischer Herkunft, das sich in die Berge zurückzog und das Leben einer Einsiedlerin führte. Jahrhunderte später wurde Palermo von der Pest heimgesucht und es heißt, Santa Rosalia sei einem Jäger erschienen, habe ihm den Weg gezeigt, um ihre sterblichen Überreste zu finden, und ihn gebeten , sie in einer Prozession durch die Stadt zu tragen.
Der Legende nach erholten sich die Kranken überall dort, wo sie hinkamen, und beendeten die Epidemie.
Anschließend wurde ihr zu Ehren ein Heiligtum auf dem Gipfel des Monte Pellegrino errichtet und Rosalia zur Schutzpatronin von Palermo gewählt.
