From 's-Hertogenbosch and Breda, people used to enter Antwerp through the Red Gate at the Horse Market. Immediately to the left, you would find yourself in the Red Street heading towards St. James' Church.
The Red Gate was a bastion in the extensive Spanish fortifications of Antwerp, which were demolished in 1866.
In the context of the construction of a new metro line, archaeological excavations of the Spanish fortifications have been conducted in recent years, including at the Red Gate. The municipality of Antwerp has published a brochure about this. (See link: more info.)
