Leffe

Leffe is a neighborhood of the Belgian city of Dinant, on the right bank of the Meuse at the confluence with the Fond de Leffe. In the Middle Ages, it was an enclave of the County of Namur within the Principality of Liège. From the 19th century until the textile crisis of the 1960s, it was an important center of the textile industry. At the beginning of World War I, on August 23, 1914, the German imperial army executed 147 workers and the director of the company Manufacture de Tissus without much reason. In total, 679 people were murdered in Dinant by the Germans in an attempt to break any will to resist in the area around the strategically important Meuse bridge for the invasion of France through terror. Many women and children found refuge at the Abbey of Our Lady.
