Ophasselt

Ophasselt is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a sub-municipality of the city of Geraardsbergen. It is a rural residential and agricultural village. Ophasselt is intersected by the N8. The place is located in the Dender region.

Old mentions of the place date back to 963 and 1015 as "Haslud". In the 11th century, the Saint Peter's Abbey in Ghent and the Abbey of Verdun owned farms in the area. In the following centuries, authority lay with the Lords of Hasselt. Ophasselt consisted of three lordships in the 15th century, namely Vrijheid, Moenebroek, and the Village, where the church was also located. In 1661, Ophasselt was elevated to a county, in the possession of Philip Frans du Faing.
