Jalhay

The memorial cross "Croix des Fiancés" commemorates a tragic love event in this region. This cross is located near the Vêquée road, which is an old Roman highway. This road runs about 5 km west of the Baraque-Michel.

On January 22, 1871, François Reiff and his fiancée Marie Solherd were on their way to Xhoffraix. François from Bastogne met Marie from Xhoffraix in Jalhay. Marie was a maid in Hèvremont.

To arrange their papers for marriage, they made the 15 km journey on foot to Xhoffraix on January 22, 1871. That evening, it suddenly started to snow, and a dense fog rolled over these hills. In this deserted area with few reference points, they became lost. They also found no house to which they could go for help. Their dead bodies were found near this cross.
