Fue construido en un meandro del Bocq, cuyo agua fluye alrededor del castillo a lo largo de algunas cascadas. El castillo pertenecía a la familia noble de Beaufort (del nombre de un castillo cerca de Huy). Entre 1266 y 1284, Pierre de Beaufort construyó la torre principal que es el corazón del castillo. En 1288, su hijo Guillermo (Guillaume), apodado los Ardennes, participó en la batalla de Woeringen. En recompensa por su valentía en la batalla, en la que fue derrotado Enrique VII de Luxemburgo, fue recompensado con el feudo de Spontin. A partir de esta época, los señores del castillo de Spontin no han dejado de agregar diversas dependencias hasta el siglo XVI, cuando adquirió su forma actual.
