Il Bodetal è conosciuto come la valle del Bode caldo e del Bode freddo nell'Harz. In senso stretto, con Bodetal si intende solo il tratto di valle a forma di gola lungo dieci chilometri del Bode tra Treseburg e Thale.
Il Bode, che nasce dal Brocken, la montagna più alta dell'Harz, si è inciso nel duro granito di Ramberg. La gola è profonda circa 140 metri a Treseburg e circa 280 metri nel passaggio verso il pre-Harz a Thale. Il Bodetal è stato già protetto dal 5 marzo 1937 e successivamente ampliato. Con una superficie attuale di 473,78 ettari, è una delle più grandi aree protette in Sassonia-Anhalt. Il Bodetal è stato inserito nel 2006 nell'elenco dei 77 geotopi nazionali distinti.
