Tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog (1568-1648), werd Damme door de Spaanse bezetter uitgebouwd tot een garnizoenstad met een stervormige omwalling. Nadat het militair belang van Damme verdween, ontwikkelden zich in de grachten diverse biotopen. Je vindt er een moerasbos, rietkragen en unieke moerasplanten zoals het Blaasjeskruid en de Moerasvaren en typische rietvogels, zoals de Waterral, de Kleine Karekiet en de Dodaars. In de winter pleisteren er duizenden "vriezeganzen", voornamelijk Kolganzen en Kleine Rietganzen. Kom genieten van dit prachtig stukje natuur! Vanuit de kijkhut heb je mooi zicht op alle vogels.
Dit stukje reservaat kan je enkel bezoeken met een natuurgids.
