In 1972 bouwde de VMW in de IJzerbroeken, nabij het natuurgebied De Blankaart, een groot betonnen spaarbekken: het is achthoekig van vorm en 120 voetbalvelden (60 ha) groot. Er kan 3 miljoen m³ water in: ruim voldoende om een derde van de kustprovincie elke dag van drinkwater te voorzien. Dat water wordt opgepompt uit de IJzer en de omliggende waterloopjes en in het waterproductiecentrum naast het centrum behandeld tot lekker en gezond drinkwater. Krachtige pompen sturen het vervolgens via de waterleidingen tot in de kraantjes thuis.
