The Mennonite Church in Friedrichstadt, Schleswig, exists as an extension of the Old Mint city museum. The church, located on Mittelburgwall, is also used today by the Danish community. Right next to the church is a Mennonite cemetery.
Already two years after the founding of the town by Duke Friedrich III of Gottorf in 1621, Mennonites settled in the city. They came as religious refugees from the Netherlands and partly from nearby Eiderstedt, where communities had already existed since 1560. Together with Lutheran Protestants, Remonstrants, Catholics, and Jews, they formed the new population and made Friedrichstadt an early place of religious tolerance in an otherwise purely Lutheran environment.
