The church and monastery of the Franciscan Friars Minor date from 1364 .
From the 17th century the monastery was enlarged and renovated . Due to the collapse of the nave, the church was closed to worship in 1927 and subjected to a series of restorations in the 1970s.
The monastery was used as a hospital and today houses the representative headquarters of the Ettore Maiorana Scientific Cultural Center.
The Church of San Francesco is also known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception, because it houses the statue of the Immaculate Madonna, which is carried in procession every year on December 8.
