Bydelen Unterneustadt ligger øst for Kassels centrum på østsiden af Fulda. På den anden side af denne flod grænser det mod nord til bydelen Wesertor og mod nord-nordøst til Wolfsanger-Hasenhecke. Mod nordøst grænser det øst for Kasseler havn til Sandershausen, en del af kommunen Niestetal; her danner den sidste del af Losse-flodens nedre løb den naturlige grænse for Kassels byområde. Mod øst og sydøst grænser Unterneustadt til bydelen Bettenhausen, hvor en del af Wahles nedre løb danner den naturlige grænse. Mod syd grænser den til Waldau og dermed til Fuldaaue, og mod sydvest til Südstadt, der ligger på den anden side af Fulda. Mod vest grænser den mellem Rondell og Fuldabrücke til bydelen Mitte, der også ligger på den anden side af Fulda og som i det væsentlige omfatter Kassels centrum.
