I anledning af 650-års jubilæet for Hattem i 1949 blev Stiftelsen Oud Hattem oprettet, og der blev afholdt en historisk udstilling. I 1971 blev der indrettet et oldtidshus, som som område-museum permanent begyndte at fokusere på historien om Hattem og omegn. Område-museet fik sin placering i en 1600-tals bolig i Achterstraat, hvor det stadig er beliggende.
