On the Grote Markt in Antwerp, there is a statue by Jef Lambeaux. It depicts the legend surrounding the Roman commander Silvius Brabo. After Julius Caesar left Gaul for England, he left Silvius Brabo with the task of ruling this part of the Roman Empire. However, there was only one place where the Scheldt could be forded and there a toll was charged by the giant Antgioon.
If the travellers did not have enough money to pay for the crossing, the giant Antigoon gave them a choice of two things. Either cut off their hand, or fight to the death with the giant.
When Brabo heard this, he went to the place to challenge the rues. He managed to cut off his hand and throw it over the Scheldt with the words: "Brabant will stretch to where this hand falls".
This legend was created around the 16th century.
