En 1886 se comenzó la construcción de la nueva iglesia de San Bavo, que fue consagrada en 1888.
La iglesia de San Bavo fue diseñada por el arquitecto Carl Weber y se considera un punto culminante de su obra. Se trata de una basílica de cruz en estilo neorrománico-gótico. Lo característico es la alta cúpula que parece algo desproporcionada. Esto se debe a que las dos torres occidentales, que se habían previsto originalmente, nunca se terminaron debido a la falta de fondos.
