A Menen si trova il più grande cimitero militare tedesco in Belgio. Qui sono sepolti circa 47.900 soldati tedeschi. Menen era sotto controllo tedesco durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Questo cimitero si trovava vicino a una foresta e ricevette così il nome di ‘Meenen Wald’. Negli anni '50 si decise di unire tutti i cimiteri tedeschi in Belgio in 4 cimiteri raccolta. Menenwald fu così ampliato con circa 40.000 soldati caduti identificati.
