U fietst door Nationaal Park Wieden-Weerribben i.o. De Wieden behoort tot de meest bijzondere moerasgebieden (Wetlands) van Europa. Het natuurgebied is ontstaan door vervening, zeg maar turfwinning. Dit proces begon rond de 13e eeuw in de Wieden, en nogal slordig. Daarom werd het overbebleven land (de legakkers en schrale gronden) een prooi van stromen en overstromingen. Wat overbleef waren de meren. Plassen die door vervening ontstaan zijn, noemt met in deze streek 'Wieden'. De bekendste zijn wel de Beulaker-, Belter- en de Bovenwijde.
