Im Mauritshuis hängt auch das berühmte Putterchen von Carel Fabritius 1654. Das Gemälde spielt eine zentrale Rolle im Buch Der Distelfink von Donna Tartt, das in dem gleichnamigen Film verfilmt wurde.
Der Name Putter wurde ursprünglich nur für Exemplare verwendet, die in Gefangenschaft gehalten wurden und gelernt hatten, mit zum Beispiel einem Fingerhut an einer Kette Wasser aus einem Behälter zu schöpfen, der sich unter ihnen befand. Mit anderen Worten: Aus einem Distelfink konnte ein Putter gemacht werden.
Im 17. Jahrhundert in Holland, wo gerade der Kunststück des Putters populär war, konnte der Vogel ein Symbol für Einfallsreichtum und Durchhaltevermögen darstellen.
