In 1369, a church of wood and thatch was built on the site of the current Grote Kerk on Kerkplein. After its consecration in 1370, the church continued to be expanded and renovated. The first extension in 1405 involved a stone choir. Work on the two side aisles began in 1429 and the ambulatory in 1480, which was completed in 1500. In 1519 the southern transept was enlarged. In 1878 the church was completely destroyed by lightning. To replace the burned down church, the current Grote Kerk was built from 1881 to 1883.
The Grote Kerk was closed for worship in 1968 and sold in 1984 to be converted into shops and apartments. The shops have now closed and a restaurant and hotel have been built.
