Der står en statue af Joop Zoetemelk i hans landsby Rijpwetering. Han vandt i 1980 Tour de France og blev i 1985 verdensmester. Zoetemelk deltog 16 gange i Tour de France, gennemførte det altid (et rekordantal) og opnåede som regel en plads blandt de første ti, hvoraf seks gange som nummer to (deraf hans kælenavn evige toer) og første i 1980. Efter Jan Janssen (1968) var han den anden hollandske Tour-vinder. I 1982 blev han endnu engang nummer to.
