Mewa was the name of this village in 1146. Perhaps that name is derived from the Frankish term for meadow. Meeuwen also has a Tobacco Museum (Weg naar Helchteren 32). The origin of this museum can be traced back to the vanished pipe factory of Bree and the cigar industry. Meeuwen lacks no regional products. Appelbierenvlaai (apple blueberry pie) is a delicious Limburg cake made with apples and blueberries. Also based on blueberries is the bratselèrke, a blueberry liqueur sweetened with honey and an alcohol content of 19 degrees. Blueberries and honey are typical natural products that are plentiful in Meeuwen. The drink can be served ice cold, but it also mixes well with sparkling wine. The name of the drink is the dialect word for 'little mess'.
