Freiburg fu fondata nel XII secolo come comune di mercato libero, da cui il nome. Le miniere d'argento nelle vicinanze di Schauinsland erano una fonte importante di capitale per Freiburg. Questo argento rese Freiburg una delle città più ricche d'Europa e nel 1327 Freiburg coniò la propria moneta, il Rappenpfennig. Alla fine del XIV secolo le vene d'argento svanirono e nel 1460 vivevano solo circa 6.000 persone all'interno delle mura della città di Freiburg. La città universitaria di Freiburg si è evoluta da un'orientazione mineraria a un centro culturale delle arti e delle scienze.
