Les Plateaux-Hageven forment une zone naturelle internationale de la Société néerlandaise pour la préservation de la nature et de Natuurpunt flamand dans le parc naturel De Groote Heide. Cette zone s'étend sur plus de 350 ha dans les municipalités néerlandaises de Bergeijk et Valkenswaard et sur plus de 150 ha dans les municipalités belges de Neerpelt et Lommel.
