Kejser Franz I. Stephan døde den 18. august 1765 uventet af et slagtilfælde i Innsbrucks Hofborg, mens herskerfamilien var i Innsbruck for at fejre brylluppet mellem erkehertug Leopold og Maria Ludovica fra Spanien. Hans hustru Maria Theresa var meget rystet over dette og sørgede dybt over ham. "Til evigt minde" grundlagde hun allerede samme år ved sin mands dødssted det verdslige adelige dameseminar.
