Der Maria-Hendrikaplein ist gesäumt von 60 Spalierplatanen, die hier in den frühen 1920er Jahren gepflanzt wurden. Ihre Kronen sind auf besondere Weise geschnitten, sodass sie gemeinsam ein Blätterdach bilden. Seit 1995 stehen diese Bäume unter Schutz, und es ist verboten, sie zu füttern...
In der Mitte des Platzes finden Sie eine wunderschöne Statue mit einem Brunnen. Dies ist ein Werk von Paul Van Gysegem. Der Mann und die Frau repräsentieren die Schelde und die Lys. Beide Flüsse werden erneut durch die beiden Wasserquellen symbolisiert, die sich in der Mitte treffen, wo die Statue steht. Die senkrechten Stützen der Skulptur deuten auf einen Durchgang, ein Tor hin. Dies ist eine Anspielung auf den Bahnhof St. Peter, für viele das moderne Tor zur Stadt.
