Maashorst

The name Maashorst refers to the fact that the Maas river flowed here about 125,000 years ago. Due to various geological processes, the course of the Maas has been shifted increasingly eastward, partly due to the rise of the Peelhorst and the subsidence of the Slenk of Venlo, where the Maas currently flows. The Maas has deposited a lot of gravel and stones in the area of the landscape park.

At the western edge of the area runs the Peelrand fault with a second fault parallel to it. These faults create zones where locally heavy groundwater flow, or spring, occurs. Perpendicular to the fault, several streams flow in a southwestern direction, such as the Kleinwijkse Loop, the Grote Wetering, the Menselse Loop, and the Kraaivenloop.
