El 7 de juliol de 1940 , un Bristol Blenheim IV del 15è Esquadró britànic es va estavellar durant un vol de reconeixement entre Terneuzen, Gant i Zeebrugge. L'avió va ser interceptat per caces Messerschmitt Bf 109 i es va estavellar a prop del pont Herdersbrug sobre el canal de Dudzele. Dos tripulants van intentar salvar-se amb els seus paracaigudes, però es van estavellar. El pilot va ser trobat a la seva cabina.
