Amb 581.858 habitants, Düsseldorf és la capital del Land de Rin del Nord-Westfàlia . La seva regió metropolitana té 1.315.736 d'habitants i és la número 33 de la Llista d'aglomeracions de la Unió Europea, i ocupa la posició 9 de la Llista de les grans ciutats d'Alemanya. Situada al costat del Rin, a prop de Colònia, és un dels centres de l'àrea Rin-Ruhr, una zona densament poblada de 12 milions d'habitants.
Els orígens de la ciutat cal buscar-los en el segle VII i segle VIII, en els assentaments ramaders i pesquers a la zona on confluïen el Düssel i el Rin. La primera menció de la ciutat, això no obstant, es fa esperar fins al 1135.
