Pamplona és la ciutat capital de la comunitat foral de Navarra, el vell Reialme de Navarra. Amb 196.955 habitants l'any 2013, Pamplona, que ocupa un lloc gairebé cèntric al mapa navarrès, està situada sobre un altiplà, a 449 metres d'altitud sobre el nivell del mar i, en gran part, vorejada per les aigües del riu Arga. Amb els seus 23,55 quilòmetres quadrats d'extensió, la ciutat està situada als 42º i 49' de latitud septentrional, i a 2° 1′ de longitud occidental.
