Aquesta església probablement data del segle XII i, amb la seva envejable posició panoràmica davant del Monte Cofano, és un element icònic del paisatge monumental d'Erice. Va ser restaurada al segle XV i reconstruïda per segona vegada entre 1631 i 1672, època en què es va construir la cúpula i que porta una inscripció gravada amb aquesta data. La construcció del campanar, iniciada l'any 1691, va quedar inacabada. El 1798 es va completar amb estuc.
La Confraria de San Giovanni Battista va ser una de les tres grans confraries d' Erice .
L'església alberga obres mestres de l'escultura del Renaixement sicilià, com el Grup de la Visitació de Gabriele di Battista, obra del 1497. A la capella de San Giovanni Evangelista a la taula de l'altar hi ha una estàtua de marbre de Sant Joan Evangelista , obra realitzada per Antonello Gagini el 1531.
