Slottet Rijvissche i Zwijnaarde stammerer allerede fra Middelalderen. Det af vandgraver omgivne slot fungerede allerede i det 12. århundrede som vandborg på den middelalderlige forsvarsbælte rundt om Gent og tilhørte St. Peters Kloster.
Gennem årene blev det ejendom af familien de van den Bossche-de Meyere. Dette var familien til Maurice Maeterlinck. Nathalie de Meyere, enke efter François van den Bossche, var hans bedstemor fra moderen side. Maeterlinck opholdt sig her regelmæssigt i sin barndom.
