Slottet i Laken er omgivet af en 120 ha stor park og blev bygget i 1782. Residenserne hed dengang Schoonenberg. Under Napoleon blev Schoonenberg en militær hovedkvarter og endda et fængsel. Slottet er blevet ombygget flere gange og kom efter opstanden mod Willem I i hænderne på den belgiske stat, som gjorde det til opholdssted for Leopold I. Alle vores konger undtagen Albert II har haft deres ophold der. Det Kongelige Palæ i Bruxelles, der ligger 7 km længere væk, fungerer som arbejdsplads.
