Gevaerts Noord er et naturområde langs bredden af kanalen, i dalen af Sydleie. Det forvaltes af vzw Natuurpunt. Indtil begyndelsen af det 20. århundrede blev flodskibene trukket af menneske- eller hestekraft. Den tidligere anlagte trækvej i kanalbakken er flere steder helt eroderet væk, hvilket har skabt de stejle bredder, nu et populært ynglested for isfugl og stagesvale.
