I 1725 blev Leijn Weckx dømt som heks. Hun blev anklaget for brandstiftelse og fortryllelse af heste, dyr, børn og andre personer. Dommen lød: 'afskæring af højre hånd, efterfulgt af kvælning og ligbrænding.' Undervejs til henrettelsesstedet lykkedes det hende dog at undslippe. Hun vandrede en tid rundt på heden og forsvandt så pludselig. Ifølge legenden forsvandt hun i jorden. Senere blev dette fortolket som 'i minerne' og hun fik navnet Putheks. I minearbejdsmiljøet lever overbevisningen om, at hun var årsagen til alt, hvad der gik galt i minen.
