Den Salm udspringer i Commanster ved den gamle preussisk-belgiske grænse, der her fulgte vandskellet, og munder ud i Amel ved rådhuset i Trois-Ponts. Fødselsområdet ligger over 500 meter, udløbet er 260 meter over havets overflade.
