Den unge Hubert Malfait (1898-1971) får som aspiran kunstner fra Emile Claus (der var fast gæst i Malfait's fars café i Astene) gode råd. Claus opfordrer Malfait til at arbejde i naturen, og Malfait viser ham sine første små malerier. Senere vil Malfait udvikle sig som ekspressionist. “Gendarmerne” nærmer sig fra landsbyen krydset med hovedvejen mellem Gent og Kortrijk. Næsten visionært ser de over vejen mod det nuværende “Malfaitplein”.
