På Obersalzberg lå Hitlers feriested. Han tilbragte her fra 1923 meget af sin tid, blandt andet på området omkring pension Moritz. Fra 1922 boede han i sin egen Berghof. Det blev i 1945 bombet til jorden. I 1930'erne blev dette område et fuldt udbygget naziberg. Det blev ledet af Martin Bormann, Hitlers sekretær. Pension Moritz blev et Volkhotel for partifæller. Her ligger også en bunker og et gangsystem på 5 km, kendt som Alpenfestung. Over klipperne lå Adelaarsnest eller Kehlsteinhaus. I dette område boede også Hermann Göring og Albert Speer.
