Kommunen ligger ved den nordlige alpelinje i Inntal på 509 m over havets overflade, få kilometer nord for grænsen mellem Tyskland og Østrig ved foden af Hochsalwand og Riesenkopf. Fra Brannenburg kører Wendelsteinbahn til Wendelstein, en af de mest kendte bjerge i Bayern. Også kendt og især populær blandt motorcyklister er den betalingspligtige Tatzelwurm-/Sudelfeldstraße, der fører forbi Tatzelwurm vandfaldet til Bayrischzell.
Byen ligger omkring 15 km syd for Rosenheim, 88 km vest for Salzburg, 22 km nord for Kufstein, 28 km øst for Miesbach og 70 km fra München.
