Franciskanerklosteret i Hamm blev grundlagt i 1455 af grev Gerhard von der Mark til Hamm. Til dette formål stillede landsherren franciskanerobservanterne til rådighed ved siden af flere profanbygninger, der efterfølgende blev anvendt som klosterbygninger, den hellige Agnes' indviede borgkapel i byens fæstning Hamm. Kapellet blev udvidet til klosterkirke et halvt århundrede senere og indviet i 1515. De andre klosterbygninger blev opført senere.
