Cuxhaven Kommune er, målt på sin areal, en af de største kommuner i Niedersachsen og en af de større i Tyskland. Det er den nordligste kommune i Niedersachsen og grænser op til Nordsøen. Med en befolkningstæthed på omkring 97 indbyggere pr. kvadratkilometer ligger kommunen under halvdelen af den føderale gennemsnit.
