Klenderhof blev planlagt i 1932 af den berlinske arkitekt Otto Firle på bestilling af Charlotte Baldner, datter af den jødiske varehusbesidder Leopold Lindemann, som havde solgt sine 17 varehuse til Karstadt-koncernen. Firle skitserede det første udkast på bagsiden af en menu fra Kampen Kurhaus. Bygherren gav anlægget i gave til sin mand, den anerkendte cellist Max „Bimbo“ Baldner, som havde opnået international berømmelse med Klingler-kvartetten. Den 30. januar 1933, dagen for Hitlers magtovertagelse, var råbygningen færdig, og om efteråret flyttede Baldner-familien ind.
