Berwick-upon-Tweed var i middelalderen hovedstaden for uld. Mange flamske folk bosatte sig her, som sendte uld til Flandern. Du kan stadig finde mange indbyggere med navnet 'Fleming'. Denne havneby var tidligere skotsk. Den ligger nu 3 km fra grænsen til Skotland på engelsk territorium.
